Rear Commodore Dan Fortman
I’m Dan Fortman and I am honored to be in the Rear Commodore position for the incredible Bay Point Yacht Club, where we have been active members since 2019. My wife, Lynn, and I have been married for over 45 years and have four children, three boys and one girl as well as three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Our main home is in Shelby and our fun home is in Marblehead. During our active boating years, beginning in the late ‘90’s, we had been members of Bay Point Marina. Currently, our boating is down in Florida during the winter along the ICW, however, we’ve enjoyed traveling internationally while participating in small ship cruising and sailing.
As a member of the Mansfield Power Squadron (MPS), an affiliate of the United States Power Squadron, since 1998, I have held many bridge positions, serving as Squadron Commander for two terms and performing the duties of Safety Officer for 18 years. Having limited boating experience, MPS offered free classes such as seamanship, piloting, navigation, marine maintenance, weather, etc., where I was able to achieve the educational status of Senior Navigator- which means I know how to use a sextant and a very sharp pencil, with eraser! I have been honored to share this knowledge with others as a part of my BPYC involvement as the club’s Safety and Education Officer. However, I leave you in good hands under the skills of USCG Certified Captain Catherine Hubbs, who has helped with our successful Women on the Water Program with Captain Norleena Poynter.
I have retired from Eagle Crusher Company in 2019 and have held positions in manufacturing from factory management from supervisor to General Manager and in Human Resources from manager to Vice-president. I was the chairman of many groups over the years such as Shelby Chamber of Commerce, CUE, and Crawford County Business/Education Advisory Board. My goal is to use my past involvement to enhance the experience of all BPYC members.
